Current activities

1. Issue of MMA senior membership cards
One initial important step is to issue MMA senior membership
cards to each and every doctor who is aged 70 years and above.
MMA will issue these cards without charging membership fees to
all senior doctors whether they are life members, ordinary
members, or non-members.
To date (end 2006) we have issued more than 450 cards and more
will be processed.
At present we have a 17 members panel of consultants/specialists
who will attend to senior members free of charge.
2. Financial support
From the early 2000, a programme for offering financial
support to sick elderly doctors was started. Since April 2003,
the amounts were further increase to 50,000 Kyats for illness
and 30,000 Kyats for bereavement.
3. Social visit
Social visit which are greatly appreciated, have been
already started by volunteer members of the group.
4. Dissemination of health education
Production of a few pamphlets on health education and
information, about diseases that are common in elderly doctors
have been started. At present pamphlets on prevention of falls,
exercise, obesity and depression have been issued, and more are
to be expected in future.
Screening Project Awareness
Today is the era of change in health scene in the world over,
the epidemiological transmission. The so-called lifestyle
diseases,- hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, diabetes and
cancer - are the diseases that most people suffer and die from
in the developed world, and increasingly more in developing
countries too. They are all chronic diseases and are usually not
evident clinically in early stages. In fact they may be" silent"
e g. hypertension, diabetes. Hence the relevance of "screening
tests" among the vulnerable group.
SGED (Support Group for Elderly Doctors) of Myanmar Medical
Association would like to urge all senior members of the
profession to be aware of the need and usefulness of "Screening
Tests". The group will soon be undertaking a project for
facilitating the interested members to take such "Screenings".
Future plans will be announced. Please visit our website:
